Not since the late nineties have offshore race fans been treated to such a wide array of performance watercraft in one location on the same weekend. This year’s 34th Annual Sarasota Grand Prix premiers with a new name and an all new format.
Suncoast Charities for Children’s 2018 HotelPlanner Sarasota Powerboat Grand Prix Festival, June 23 -July 4 is set to once again make powerboat racing history involving Powerboat P1 and Race World Offshore organizations.
“Powerboat racing is a tradition for Sarasota and the large offshore powerboats are what race fans look forward to seeing each year.” states Festival Director Lucy Nicandri. “Bringing both organizations together for our festival this year, will greatly enhance the racing experience for our hundreds of guests and spectators, whether they watch from the beach or on television. Not only will this year’s festival include a full week of special events and entertainment, but will culminate with one of the largest fleets of performance craft to compete at one venue on the same weekend in many years.”
While Powerboat P1 maintains the race contract with Sarasota, Race World Offshore will be providing additional personnel to assist with technical inspections for Sunday’s Canopied Class Races.
Racing begins on Saturday, June 30, featuring the SuperStock Class (28’ one-design open canopy race boats) and AquaX races. On Sunday, July 1, full canopied offshore classes will compete for the checkered flag.
“Race fans want to see racing and it’s been a long time since fans have had an opportunity to enjoy a full weekend of deck to deck competition”, says Larry Bleil, President of Race World Offshore. “ We are very pleased to be joining with Powerboat P1 for this event and look forward to other opportunities in the future to continue to expand the sport.”
“The sole purpose of this collaboration is to build a strong and consistent platform within the sport of offshore powerboat racing.” says Nicandri. “The growth of the sport continues to have a positive impact on our community and is a tremendous asset in providing the needed support to the Suncoast Children Charities.”
